Just a few observations from a trip to the bird and fish market:
1) A good size rainbow lorikeet is about $50. They were pretty impressive.
2) The good singing birds that look great can be anywhere from $100-$300. To put that into perspective, the average monthly wage here for a university educated person is around $150.
3) You can get a large owl for around $50. You can buy plenty of crickets (alive of course) close by to feed to the owls. The crickets are also a good snack for the turtles you can get at the fish market.
4) A flying fox (fruit bat for our American readers) is about $50. I wonder if the Hendra virus is included?
If u are not into birds, there are snakes and other reptiles available. I have no idea how legal this all is but it sure is different to an average pet shop at home.
